Tonight I, with two other friends, got to watch the new Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment movie Justice League. A movie based on five DC heroes, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, and Cyborg, coming together to save the world from Steppanwolf. I’ll be honest, I did not go into the movie expecting much from the Zack Snyder film. However upon watching it, I found myself mildly impressed with the film given the previous milquetoast films directed by Snyder, particularly Batman Vs. Superman. The DCEU has not had a spectacular start with Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Man of Steel. Although I enjoyed Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, I feel as though the other two films left a bad taste in most people’s mouth.
Justice League, however, left me pleasantly surprised. I don’t know if that is because my expectations were already through the floor or because it was genuinely better than some of the other films. I felt that the chemistry between the different heroes was rather decent especially that between the Flash and Superman at the end. I enjoyed the after credits scene and I feel that if the DCEU follows in this direction of being slightly more lighthearted and having adequate amounts of comic relief will help the films meet their full potential, though it is important for the universe to not fully emulate the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make the movies more comedic and too lighthearted as I feel Marvel already fulfills this role quite well. There needs to be a franchise that fulfills the darker and menacing side of comics and comic book stories.
Justice League provides the continuation of, hopefully, a revitalization of the DCEU following Wonder Woman. After Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, I personally felt as though the DCEU was in a downwards spiral with no hope of return and no hope of redemption as the movies were so bad and made no sense, in my personal opinion. Justice League was a step in the right direction and I hope that the future movies in the DCEU, particularly Aquaman and Flashpoint, are great movies on the level of Wonder Woman, or preferably, even better.
